CPD Module in Felling Trees up to 380mm (C&G NPTC) 0041-02

Chainsaw Cutting

Course Overview:

CPD Module 002 – Felling Small Trees up to 380mm

This CPD module delivered by a City & Guilds NPTC approved assessor is for qualified chainsaw operators who already hold a Level 2 Certificate of Competence in Felling Trees up to 380mm, and under the Provision and Use of Work Equipment Regulations (PUWER), are required to undergo refresher training every 3 to 5 years.  Focusing on the practical skills required to comply with legislation, industry technical standards, and best practices candidates will complete scored skills tests, each with a minimum required score to successfully complete the CPD module.  Feedback will be provided on the candidate’s performance and advise on any recommendations where appropriate.

Chainsaws are potentially hazardous machines and could cause serious injury or even death.  A reasonable level of physical fitness is therefore required to undertake the practical elements of this course.

Candidates should have their own equipment and PPE compliant with current CE/EN standards.  If this presents a problem, please let us know well in advance of the training so suitable arrangements can be made ensuring the equipment is available.

Equipment:

  • Petrol driven chainsaw with maximum recommended guide bar 15 inch
  • Relevant chainsaw operator’s manual (paper or electronic copy)
  • Maintenance tools eg wrench and screwdriver
  • Sharpening kit eg round file, flat file, file guide, depth gauge tool, filing stump vice
  • Felling and lifting aids eg felling lever, wedge, timber tongs/hook, turning strap
  • Fuel and biodegradable chainsaw oil in approved container(s)

Personal Protective Equipment:

  • Safety helmet complying with BS EN 397 or BS EN 14052 (only recommended for groundwork)
  • Hearing protection complying with BS EN 352-1 or BS EN 352-2 or BS EN 352-3
  • Eye protection/ mesh visor complying with BS EN 1731
  • Gloves complying with BS EN 381-7
  • All round leg and groin protection complying with BS EN 381-5.  AFAG recommends Type C leg protection.  Where Type C is impractical (eg risk of heat stress), it may be appropriate to use Type A, where justified by risk assessment.
  • Chainsaw safety footwear complying with BS EN ISO 17249
  • Non snag outer clothing  (preferably high vis)
  • Personal first aid kit, as a minimum a large wound dressing, barrier gloves, plasters and whistle
