Course Overview:
Unit 201 – Chainsaw Maintenance and Crosscutting
This course is for individuals who operate chainsaws as part of their work in arboriculture, forestry or other industries. The 2 days training is designed to prepare candidates for their C&G NPTC assessment and provides the knowledge, understanding and skills required to maintain a chainsaw and crosscut timber safely and to industry standards in line with current legislation. Topics covered include risk assessment, emergency planning, legislation, industry best practice, manufacturers recommendations for chainsaw maintenance, battery powered machine maintenance, individual components, maintaining guide bar and chain, reassembling a chainsaw and cutting system, waste disposal, personal protective equipment, biosecurity and environmental considerations, crosscutting timber, moving and stacking timber and safe working methods.
Course Objectives:
- Identify the necessary personal protective equipment required, report on its condition and
locate the various standard marks - Identify required health and safety features on a chainsaw
- Prepare the chainsaw for use with the correct fuel/oil mix and chain lubrication
- Start the chainsaw from both cold and hot in a safe manner
- Carry out pre-cutting safety tests – and state the procedures if the chainsaw fails these
tests - State the possible hazards/risks when carrying out maintenance or operational tasks
- Organise site safety and state the procedures required
- Identify faults and defects on a chainsaw and decide which you can sort yourself and
which will need the help of a service engineer - Select and identify the correct tools to enable maintenance and report on their
serviceability
Chainsaws are potentially very dangerous items of machinery and could cause serious injury or death, therefore a minimum level of fitness is required to complete the practical elements of this course.
Candidates should have their own equipment and PPE which conforms to CE/EN standards. Please inform us if this prevents a problem as some items can be provided.
Equipment:
- Petrol driven chainsaw with maximum recommended guide bar 15 inch
- Relevant chainsaw operator’s manual (paper or electronic copy)
- Maintenance tools eg wrench and screwdriver
- Sharpening kit eg round file, flat file, file guide, depth gauge tool
- Fuel and chainsaw oil in approved container(s)
Personal Protective Equipment:
- Safety helmet complying with BS EN 397 or BS EN 14052 (only recommended for groundwork)
- Hearing protection complying with BS EN 352-1 or BS EN 352-2 or BS EN 352-3
- Eye protection/ mesh visor complying with BS EN 1731
- Gloves complying with BS EN 381-7
- All round leg and groin protection complying with BS EN 381-5. AFAG recommends Type C leg protection. Where Type C is impractical (eg risk of heat stress), it may be appropriate to use Type A, where justified by risk assessment.
- Chainsaw safety footwear complying with BS EN ISO 17249
- Non snag outer clothing
- Personal first aid kit, as a minimum a large wound dressing, barrier gloves, plasters and whistle
