Course Overview:
Unit 309 – Use of a Chainsaw from a Mobile Elevating Work Platform
This two‑day training course provides the knowledge, understanding and practical skills required to prepare and operate a chainsaw from a Mobile Elevated Work Platform (MEWP) safely and to industry standards, in line with current legislation. The C&G NPTC practical assessment takes place on a separate day.
Topics covered include: Identifying hazards, risks, and appropriate control measures, Emergency procedures and rescue considerations, Relevant legislation, industry guides, and best practice, Safe working loads and MEWP stability, Setting up, positioning, and operating a MEWP.
To achieve this qualification candidates must successfully complete a one‑to‑one practical assessment with oral questioning, carried out by a City & Guilds NPTC approved assessor.
Equipment:
- LOLER compliant MEWP with relevant operator’s manual
- Full body harness EN361 compliant with work restraint lanyard
- Top or rear handled chainsaw (maximum guide bar 15 inch) with maintenance tools
- Hand saw
- Fuel and oil in approved container(s)
Personal Protective Equipment:
- Safety helmet complying with BS EN 397
- Hearing protection complying with BS EN 352-1 or BS EN 352-2 or BS EN 352-3
- Eye protection/ mesh visor complying with either BS EN 1731
- Gloves complying with BS EN 381-7
- All round leg and groin protection complying with BS EN 381-5. AFAG strongly recommends Type C leg protection for aerial work.
- Chainsaw safety footwear complying with BS EN ISO 17249
- Non snag outer clothing (preferably high vis)
- Personal first-aid kit, incorporating a large wound dressing, barrier gloves, plasters and a whistle
Prerequisites:
Potential candidates must have successfully completed:
Level 2 Certificate of Competence in Chainsaw Maintenance and Crosscutting
Level 2 Certificate of Competence in Felling Trees up to 380mm
Level 2 Award in the Safe Use of a Mobile Elevated Work Platform or equivalent IPAF training
Location:
Training and assessment will take place at your premises using your own equipment. If preferred training can take place at our premises in Ongar, however you must provide your own equipment.
Duration:
Total 3 days (2 days training plus one-day assessment)
Cost:
