Course Overview:
Unit 204 – Using a Chainsaw from a Rope and Harness
This course is for individuals who use chainsaws as part of their work in arboriculture, forestry or other industries. The 3 days training is designed to prepare candidates for their C&G NPTC assessment and provides the knowledge, understanding and skills required to use chainsaws from a rope and harness safely and to industry standards in line with current legislation. Topics covered include risk assessment, emergency planning, legislation, industry best practice, environmental considerations, tree condition, tools and equipment, pruning techniques, and pruning from a rope and harness.
Course Objectives:
- Understand the specific industry legislation and safety guidelines relevant to using a chainsaw from a rope and harness.
- Identification of the hazards and risks associated with the working area.
- Ability to carry out a basic level hazard evaluation of a tree.
- Be able to demonstrate techniques for hauling chainsaws into the tree and attaching them appropriately to the harness.
- Carry out pre-start checks to the chainsaw with cold and warm starting techniques.
- Understand how secure and comfortable work positioning while using a chainsaw from a rope and harness improves safety and work quality.
- Explain the basic principles of natural target pruning.
- Demonstrate the variety of different cuts including step cuts, sink cuts and natural target pruning cuts and when they’re appropriate.
- When and how to operate top handled or lightweight rear handled chainsaws in a safe and efficient way.
- Be competent in the use of pulling ropes and slings to assist with the cut sections.
You should have a good level of fitness to carry out the practical elements of this training course safely.
Candidates MUST have their own tree climbing equipment which complies with LOLER Regulations. This means providing a receipt of purchase if equipment is less than 6 months old. Or, produce evidence the equipment has been thoroughly examined by a “competent person” in the last 6 months, and inspected weekly with an accompanying record which can verify this.
Equipment:
- Approved tree climbing harness in good condition, CE marked with leg loops
- 2 x Climbing ropes – minimum 11.7mm, 35-50m long required with manufacturers eye and without any defects
- 6 x self-locking 3 movement Karabiners
- Friction device for each main line and short strop, either mechanical or rope ie zigzag or prussik loops
- Spare prussik loop for rescue
- 1 x adjustable strop for climbing and rescue recommended 5m in length must have a manufacturers eye
- 1 x Set of climbing spikes
- Teufeleberger multi saver 2m
- 1 x Steel core flip line 3m or 5m with adjuster and soft link for cutting
- 1 x Top or rear handled chainsaw
- Climbers may carry a knife with either a lockable folding blade or a fixed blade held in a protective sheath
Personal Protective Equipment:
- Safety helmet (the HSE Arboriculture and Forestry Advisory Group (AFAG) recommends a mountaineering-style helmet complying with BS EN 12492)
- Hearing protection complying with BS EN 352
- Eye protection/ mesh visor complying with BS EN 1731
- Gloves appropriate to the task and subject to the operator’s risk assessment
- All round leg and groin protection complying with BS EN 381-5. AFAG strongly recommends Type C leg protection for aerial work.
- Chainsaw boots with good grip and ankle support complying with BS EN ISO 17249
- Non snag outer clothing. The use of high-visibility clothing may also be appropriate.
- Personal first-aid kit, incorporating a large wound dressing, barrier gloves, plasters and a whistle

Level 2 Certificate of Competence in Tree Climbing and Aerial Rescue
Level 2 Certificate of Competence in Chainsaw Maintenance and Crosscutting
Level 2 Certificate of Competence in Felling Trees up to 380mm
