Chainsaw Cutting

Course Overview:

This course is for operators with some experience or those that already hold chainsaw maintenance and crosscutting; novice operators may require further training.

One-day training that delivers both practical skills and health and safety guidance as well as demonstrating that you and your employer have completed sufficient training to meet the Provision and Use of Work Equipment Regulations 1998 (PUWER).  Topics covered include risk assessments, legislation, personal protective equipment, pre-use checks, routine checks and maintenance, preparation of site, machine and materials.

To minimise risk as much as possible you should be confident in operating and maintaining powered pole pruners, and this course will provide you with that confidence. The course focuses not only on operating the machinery safely and effectively, it also teaches candidates how to protect yourself, others around you and the environment.

Course Objectives:

  1. Health & safety legislation and industry best practice
  2. Emergency planning procedure
  3. Use of appropriate tools and equipment
  4. Maintain pruner and components
  5. Maintain cutting system
  6. Reassemble pruner
  7. Safe starting of pruner
  8. Branch tension and compression
  9. Pre-start checks
  10. Waste disposal

Candidates should have their own equipment and PPE which conforms to CE/EN standards.  Please inform us if this prevents a problem.

Equipment:

  • Powered pole pruner with relevant operator’s manual (paper or electronic copy)
  • Maintenance tools and sharpening kit eg files, file guide, depth gauge tool
  • First aid kit
  • Fuel and chainsaw oil in approved container(s)

Personal Protective Equipment:

  • Safety helmet to BS EN 12492
  • Hearing protection complying with BS EN 352
  • Eye protection/ mesh visor complying with BS EN 1731
  • Gloves complying with BS EN 381-7
  • Non snag outer clothing (preferably high vis)
  • Leg protection complying with BS EN 381-5
  • Chainsaw boots
